Special Topics Paper Informal Abstract: Young Adult Fiction

There was a time that existed before Katniss Everdeen voluntarily replaced her sister Prim in the deadly Hunger Games, and even before Harry Potter made his way into the Restricted Section of the Hogwarts library with his Invisibility Cloak. In fact, there was even a time before the term “teenager” was even coined.
Believe it or not, Young Adult literature has an extensive history. It has fascinated many readers for centuries, in fact. Only recently did the likes of Katniss or Harry really kick off the genre, even creating a new audience of adult readers. How did this genre get started? What is so inspiring about Young Adult Fiction that makes adults want to vicariously revisit their teenage years? Aspiring librarians should study the writing techniques, authors, awards, trends, and early history of the genre in order to completely understand Young Adult Fiction and its audience. The topic for my paper was Young Adult Fiction. There were so many topics within YA, such as the ones I researched above, that I barely scratched the surface on. This could easily be turned into an in-depth study! I was very surprised to find that there was an adult audience who read YA, but it made me feel way more comfortable to admit I enjoy reading Young Adult Fiction as an adult, too! I have seen the above video on YouTube before, and thought this was the perfect time to share it!
